The driver of a dump truck died last week after suffering a medical emergency on the road. According to Hernando Today, Charles Owen was traveling north on U.S. 41 when an undefined medical issue caused him to lose control of the Mack truck he was driving. After
rear-ending Dallas Dunlap's pick-up truck stopped at an intersection, the dump truck
rolled over, coming to rest in the highway's median.
Florida Highway Patrol responded and both drivers were taken for treatment. Dunlap was hospitalized for what the news outlet described as "minor injuries" he sustained in the rear-end accident. Owen died in the hospital as a result of the medical condition he experienced. Both men were wearing their seat belts at the time of the
truck accident, which is still under investigation.
News outlets often describe injuries that are not life threatening or catastrophic as being "minor." However, that does not mean such injuries are not real or ongoing. After a rear end collision, the person in the front car often experiences neck, back or other injuries that are not visible to other people. As a Tampa truck accident attorney, I have seen this many times. The person is evaluated in the hospital and sent home. When their injuries do not resolve, they end up at a doctor's office for ongoing medical treatment. Sometimes the injuries are permanent and last a lifetime. Hopefully Mr. Dunlap will not be one of those people.
